Softball Drops Pair in Second Day of Kickoff Classic

Wright State split a twinbill with IUPUI Tuesday in the regular-season home finale at the WSU Softball Field, falling 7-0 in the first game before taking the second game 5-0.

The Jaguars took control of the opener early, scoring all seven of their runs in the first three innings. WSU threatened in the second as Reagan Stofcheck had the first of her two hits for the game, a triple with one out, and again in the sixth with two runners on base, but could not push across a run.

The Wright State offense, however, came alive in the second game, starting with a run in the first. With two out, Libby Pfeffer doubled down the left field line and Becka Peterson followed with a hit up the middle to drive in Pfeffer.

The Raiders then used the long ball to open a 4-0 advantage in the third. Honnah Susor reached on an infield to start the frame and, one out later, Pfeffer knocked a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left center for her seventh home run of the season. Two pitches later, Peterson connected on a 0-1 pitch for a solo home run to left, her seventh of the year.

WSU rounded out the scoring with a run in the fifth and again, it was Pfeffer and Peterson leading the way as both singled with one out. Pinch-runner Ashton Salyers stole third and scored as Hanna Floyd dropped a single into left field.

Ashley Sharp (6-11) pitched the first shutout of her collegiate career as the freshman righthander allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out five. Sharp threw just 76 pitches, 52 of those for strikes.

Pfeffer and Peterson each had three hits and two RBI in the nightcap, with Pfeffer scoring twice. Floyd added two hits.

Wright State (17-30) heads to Horizon League leader Oakland for a three-game series this weekend to close out the regular season. The Raiders and Golden Grizzlies will play a single game on Friday at 4:00, followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00.
