A defensive battle for most of the match, the offense for the Wright State men's soccer team came alive in the final seven minutes as the Raiders won at Eastern Illinois Saturday 2-0.
The two teams combined to take just seven shots in a scoreless first half and the second half looked to be more of the same until junior forward Eric Lynch broke the deadlock with his second goal of the season at the 83:31 mark. Lynch received a pass from junior forward Peguy Ngatcha and was able to dribble around the EIU goalkeeper.
WSU then added an insurance goal at the 88:41 mark as freshman midfielder Jackson Dietrich tallied his second goal of the year. Ngatcha was again credited with the assist, his first two assists of the season.
"Today we played a really difficult opponent in Eastern Illinois," said WSU head coach Bryan Davis. "They gave us fits with their hard work. Our guys, I felt, met the challenge and stuck to the process of what we do."
"Overall, the biggest question mark our staff had before the fall was how would we respond to adversity," added Davis. "Today, we passed a very challenging test."
The Wright State defense allowed the Panthers to attempt just six shots in the match as junior goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer posted his third shutout of the season, recording three saves in the process.
""Each game we have different players step up and today was no different," said Davis. "It may not show on the stat sheet, but this team has a lot of guys contributing. Tyler made two massive saves to maintain the shutout and Brett Elder came in and really changed the context of the game with his performance. Austin Polster also had to adjust to a new position and did so brilliantly."
Wright State (4-1) returns to Alumni Field to host West Virginia on Tuesday, September 15, at 7:00.
