
Four in Double Figures as Women Pull Away from Penguins

The Wright State women's basketball team had four score in double figures and two post double-doubles as it pulled away for a 71-58 Horizon League victory over Youngstown State Thursday evening at the Wright State Nutter Center.
The Penguins jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with a pair of thress, only to see WSU take the lead at 9-8 on a fast-break layup from Myrthe den Heeten at the 5:25 mark of the opening quarter.

Youngstown State tied the score at 23 on an Indiya Benjamin three with 3:34 remaining in the second stanza before the Raiders tallied the final seven points of the period, including a Mackenzie Taylor three, to take a 30-23 halftime lead.
YSU again drew close in the third quarter, only trailing 40-38 until Wright State closed out the period with an 11-3 burst, six coming from Chelsea Welch.
A Benjamin three drew the Penguins to within two at 55-53 with 7:10 play, but it was all Raiders the rest of the way as they finished the game with a 16-5 run, including key threes by Symone Simmons and Emily Vogelpohl.
WSU shot 48 percent from the field the final 20 minutes to end up at 40 percent overall while YSU finished at 34 percent for the game despite hitting 10 of 27 three-pointers.
Wright State led 45-39 on the boards, 30-18 in points in the paint and 21-7 in second-chance points.
Four Raiders scored in double figures, led by Welch's 19, all but two coming in the second half. Simmons posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds as did Smith with 14 points and a career-best 16 boards. Taylor added 11 points.
Wright State (10-5, 2-1 Horizon) hosts Cleveland State on Saturday, January 7, at 1:00.
