The 17th ranked Wright State men's soccer team will return to action after a six-day break, when the Jaguars of IUPUI head to Alumni Field for a crucial Horizon League match-up. The Raiders currently sit just three points ahead of the Jags in the Horizon League standings, with the Raiders holding a game in hand over IUPUI.
Raider Round-Up
Wright State returned to its winning ways last week, with a 3-0 home triumph over West Virginia on Tuesday, and earning a 2-0 victory on the road over Oakland on Saturday. With no mid-week game on the schedule this week, the Raiders will have had six days of preparation when IUPUI comes to Alumni Field on Saturday evening. Having time to prepare has been very beneficial for Wright State this season, who boasts a 6-0-2 record when having three or more days to prepare for a match.
"We have been preaching all season about playing our game," commented Raiders head coach Jake Slemker. "We believe that if we play the way we know how to, we don't have to worry as much about what the other team does."
Playing their own way has worked out very well so far for the Raiders (10-1-2, 4-0-1 Horizon League; First Place), whose only setback came at the hands of 6th ranked Virginia on October 2. With just four matches to play, the Raiders sit atop the Horizon League with 13 conference points, and are in prime position with the Horizon League Tournament just two and a half short weeks away.
Scouting IUPUI
Sitting just three points behind the Raiders in the Horizon League standings with 10 points, the Jaguars (3-8-3, 3-2-1 Horizon League; Third Place) will certainly be bringing their best to Alumni Field on Saturday. Head coach Brian Barnett's team has played some solid competition in non-conference play, which has prepared them well for Horizon League play. The Jags are 1-2-1 in their last four matches, including most recently a 1-1 draw with Cleveland State, whom the Raiders defeated 4-1 on September 22. The Jags are led offensively by Alan Aguilar, who has connected for four of his team's 10 goals on the season to this point. Defense is a crucial part of IUPUI's game, allowing just 19 goals in 14 matches this season. Goalkeeper Quinn McCallion has played every minute of action for the Jags this season, collecting a .793 save percentage and a 1.25 goals against average.
Series
The Raiders hold a commanding 15-3 series lead all-time against the Jaguars, but with crucial points on the line Saturday evening, fans can expect a battle from start to finish.
Coverage
Saturday's match at Alumni Field will be the second-to-last time the 17th ranked Raiders play at home this regular season. Coach Slemker has turned this Raiders team into must-see action, so you'll want to make your way to Alumni Field Saturday night for the 7:00 pm match. ESPN+ will carry the match live, with Patrick Stukkie calling all the action.
