The nationally 18th ranked and number one seeded Wright State Raiders men's soccer team will continue their historic season Saturday evening, as the Horizon League Tournament comes to a close with the championship match. The Raiders will face off against the UIC Flames with a bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
History in the Making
The Raiders will look to continue this history-making season Saturday night, as they will look to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. The Raiders will also be looking to secure the best winning percentage in program history when they take the pitch Saturday evening at Alumni Field. The Raiders made it to the championship match of the Horizon League tournament two seasons ago, but fell to the same UIC side they will see this evening 1-0.
Unflappable
A day-by-day mentality is something that has been preached by first year head coach Jake Slemker since the start of the season, and that mentality is something his players will bring into the biggest match of some of their careers Saturday night in Fairborn, Ohio. "The guys have already flipped the switch," Slemker commented after an exciting semifinal victory in penalty kicks. "They are focused and locked in on the task at hand."
Scouting UIC
The task at hand is a UIC team loaded with speed and talent. A win would give the Flames a third straight crown for the first time in school history, and would be the first Horizon League three-peat since Milwaukee won four straight tourneys from 2002-2005. The Flames also needed penalty kicks to move on to the championship match, defeating IUPUI in the semifinal night-cap Thursday night. Saturday's meeting will be the ninth postseason matchup between these two sides, and is sure to produce must-see moments.
