The Wright State volleyball team fell in the final match of the Crusader Classic to host Valparaiso 3-1 by scores of 25-13, 15-25, 25-18 and 25-17. It was also their final tuneup before starting Horizon League play next weekend versus Milwaukee at home Friday night. WSU is now 8-4 while Valpo goes to 12-2.
Celia Powers and Teddie Sauer each finished with 10 kills as Powers added 16 digs and four blocks. Sauer had five blocks. Lainey Stephenson ended with 25 assists and 20 digs with three blocks and two aces. Jenna Story posted 10 digs.
First Set
The Raiders shot up to leads of 4-1, 10-5 and 21-7 before taking the set 25-13. Powers led the way with four kills; Sauer added three kills and two blocks. Stephenson finished with six assists and six digs. As a team, WSU hit .393 with just one hitting error.
Second Set
WSU took a 4-0 advantage until the Crusaders tied the set at nine each and outscored the Raiders 16-6 for the 25-15 victory. Powers and Sauer each had two kills as Stephenson posted four assists and three more digs.
Third Set
Wright State kept it close throughout, down 12-10 until Valpo inched away for the win at 25-18. Sauer had three kills with Taylor Gibson, Natalie Santana, Alannah Lemming and Powers each had two. Powers added seven digs and two blocks.
Fourth Set
Valpo led from the start at 6-0 and 18-7, cruising to the 25-17 decision. Santana continued solid play with three more kills to hit .286 in the final set. Stephenson posted five assists, eight digs and two blocks.
All-Tournament Team
The Raiders finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record, losing to the champions Valparaiso. Jenna Story and Alannah Lemmnig were named to the all-tournament team.
Next Up
The Raiders come home to host Horizon League foe Milwaukee Friday at 6 pm and UIC Saturday at 4 pm.
