The Raiders Open Horizon League Play Friday Against Milwaukee at Home
After playing the first 12 matches on the road, the Wright State volleyball team comes home to open the Horizon League schedule this weekend at McLin Gym. The Raiders will host Milwaukee Friday at 6 pm and UIC Saturday at 4 pm. Friday's match will air on ESPN+.
Wright State
Off to its best start since 2015, the Raiders hold an 8-4 record overall after defeating Western Illinois (3-0) and Cornell (3-2) at the Crusader Invitational last weekend. Alannah Lemming and Jenna Story were selected to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Abby Barcus leads the team at 2.87 kills per set with Celia Powers right behind her at 2.57 and Teddie Sauer at 2.43. Story has been at a clip of 4.00 digs per set as Barcus sits at 3.55. Freshman Lainey Stephenson leads the team with almost eight assists per set. The Raiders are averaging 11.5 kills per set. Offensively, WSU ranks third in the league in hitting percentage, but their defense has been a big part of their early success as they rank first or second in opponent kills, digs, hitting percentage and assists.
Milwaukee
The Panthers are currently 1-12 with their lone win coming against Eastern Illinois (3-0) at the Bradley Tournament last weekend. Jess Grabowski, who is averaging 4.90 digs, was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week last week as Abby Koenen was selected to the Bradley All-Tournament Team. Mackenzie Mroczenski leads the Panthers at 2.20 kills per set and 0.79 blocks. The Panthers lead the overall series 41-17 with the teams splitting the two meetings last year.
UIC
The Flames are 7-6 overall, coming off wins over Loyola (3-1) and DePaul (3-0) in the Chicago Cup last Saturday. Clara Lamb and Manuela Conte were named to the All-Tournament Team. Lamb is averaging 2.27 kills overall. Velina Minkova holds a 3.95 digs average while Marija Borcic leads UIC at 6.07 assists. UIC will open their league play at IUPUI Friday night. The Flames leads the overall series 35-25 after winning both meetings last year. UIC welcomes 11 newcomers to the 2018 squad, 10 of which are freshman. The newcomers are also seeing a lot of court time, as Ndekwe, Musante, Borcic, Lamb and Minkova have made an appearance in every match thus far.
