Four score double-figures as Raiders open campaign with win

The Wright State men's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a 96-77 victory over Central State on Tuesday night, as four players tallied double-digit scoring nights inside the Nutter Center.

The Raiders (1-0) will look to carry Tuesday's momentum into the weekend as they hit the road for the first time this year, making the short trip to take on Miami in a 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon tipoff.

Freshman Tanner Holden led the way for the Raiders with a 21-point night in his collegiate debut, shooting 10-for-16 from the floor with seven rebounds in a team-high 26 minutes of action. Sophomore Skyelar Potter finished the night shooting 7-for-8 from the floor, including knocking down five three-pointers, on the way to a 19-point night.

Senior Cole Gentry tallied a team-high five assists to go along with his 13 points and sophomore Jaylon Hall finished with 11 points and four steals for the Raiders, who swiped 13 steals as a team in the win.

Junior Loudon Love (nine points, six rebounds), senior Bill Wampler (seven points, five rebounds, three assists) and freshman Grant Basile (six points, five rebounds) also filled up the final box score which saw 12 players see action – nine of them contributing double-digit minutes.

As a team, Wright State shot 53 percent from the floor and hit 12 three-pointers (40 percent) while going 10-for-12 at the free throw line. Defensively, the Raiders held Central State to 42 percent shooting overall and 35 percent from deep. Wright State won the battle on the boards, 42-33, pulling down 29 rebounds off the defensive glass and 13 offensive boards, and also picking Central State for 13 steals.

With the score knotted at 17-all as the clock rolled under the 13-minute mark in the first half, the Raiders exploded for a quick 10-0 scoring run over the next three minutes - highlighted a dunk and a pair of three-point baskets from Potter, who finished with 16 of his 19 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Up by 12 points at the halftime intermission, Wright State raced out to a 16-5 run over the first five minutes of the second half, highlighted by a pair of thunderous dunks through the lane by Holden, to push the margin above 20 points, where it stayed for much of the remainder of the night.

Central State saw two players finish with double-digit scoring nights, as Darweshi Hunter recorded a game-high 35 points and Quinton Glaspie finished with 11 points.
