The No.5 Wright State women's tennis team won 4-2 against the Milwaukee Flames on Friday afternoon and will advance to play the No.1 UIC Flames on Saturday at 3:00 PM.
No.5 Wright State v. No.4 Milwaukee
The No.5 Raiders downed the No.4 Panthers on Friday afternoon to advance to the Horizon League Semifinals in West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday afternoon.
The doubles matches between to Wright State and Milwaukee was a matchup between two of the strongest squads in the conference. The Panthers' top pairs this spring were a combined 19-3 with two of their previous losses coming to the Raiders in the regular season matchup between the two teams. The Raiders flexed their muscles in their two wins with Haily Morgan and Madison Riley winning 6-1 on Court One while Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney securing the doubles point with a 6-2 win on Court Two.
Luisa Pelayo extended the Raiders' lead over the Panthers with a 6-1, 6-0 win on Court Three against Nicole Clarke. The Panthers were able to pull back within one team point of the Raiders with a 6-0, 6-3 on Court One against Andreea Craciun. Madison Riley made the team score 3-1 with a 6-1 and 6-1 win on Court Four. After the Panthers gained an additional point on Court Six, Jillian Milano secured the Raiders' win on Court Five with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Raiders' win was aided by Haily Morgan who staved off the Horizon League Freshman of the Year Mayya Perova. Morgan won the first set before the match went unfinished on the way to a Wright State win.
No.5 Wright State v. No.1 UIC
The Raiders will face off against the Flames on Saturday at 3:00 PM at Purdue's Schwartz Tennis Center.
The Raiders suffered a narrow 3-4 loss to the Flames on March 31st at home. Wright State dropped the doubles point but earned their team points from Haily Morgan, Madison Riley, and Grace Whitney in the close loss.
The UIC Flames earned a No.1 seed in the Horizon League Tournament after finishing the regular season 18-5 overall and 8-1 in the conference. On the singles courts, Lucie Prochazkova and Rachel LeComber both hold an 8-1 record while Lejla Colic and Georgie Sanders finished the regular season with 7-2 marks.
In doubles play, Colic and Prochazkova hold a 5-2 record at the top of the lineup for the Flames.
Four Flames were honored by the League this season with Shannon Tully winning Coach of the Year, Lejla Colic was named to the Horizon League First Team, with Lucie Prochazkova and Karyna Bihel each named to the Second Team.
The winner of the semifinal match moves on to the Championship, which will be played on Sunday, April 28 at 3 p.m.
