Hailey Brumfield of the Wright State Track and Field team found out today that she has qualified to participate in the 2019 NCAA East Regional to be held in Jacksonville, FL May 23-25.
She earned the honor with her time of 34:47.58 in the 10,000-Meter Run at the Bison Outdoor Classic in mid-April. The Tipp City, OH native will be the third Raider track student-athlete ever to qualify for an NCAA event, following Tiffany Brigham in 2008 for the 100-Meter Dash and Cassandra Lloyd for the 100-Meter Hurdles in 2009-2012. The NCAA accepted the top 48 for each individual event. Brumfield's event will be run Thursday nigtht at 9 pm.
"I've learned that you should never give up on a dream," Brumfield said. "I owe everything to my family, my fiance Ryan, my team, and my coaches. They have all kept me seeing clearly that all the work I was putting in would someday show. I hope with this race that I can show that I run with God and with his strength all the fear and anxiety goes away."
"What a great honor for Hailey to qualify to the NCAA Preliminary Round," WSU head coach Rick Williamson said. "To be only the third Raider ever to advance to this level just shows you how difficult it is. As a freshman she had a dream to make it here, and with a focused and diligent work ethic she made it happen. Hailey will be an extraordinary representative for our program and Wright State University."
The East Regional will be run at University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium. The top 12 finishers will advance to compete in the NCAA Championship Meet June 5-8 in Austin, TX.
