Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Raiders ice Penguins; remain undefeated at home in HL play

The Wright State men's basketball team remained undefeated at home in Horizon League play with a 79-72 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday night inside the Nutter Center as three Raiders finished with double-figure scoring nights.

The win improved the Raiders to 17-4 overall and a Horizon League-leading 7-1 in conference play, while Youngstown State fell to 11-9 overall and 4-3 in HL action. Wright State now gets set to close the homestand next Friday night against Northern Kentucky, who sits in second place at 6-2 in the Horizon after a Saturday night home win over Cleveland State.

Next Friday night's game against Northern Kentucky tips off at 9 p.m. from the Nutter Center and will be nationally broadcast on ESPNU.

Saturday night was a back-and-forth battle for most of the first half, as the Raiders pushed the lead to as many as eight on several occasions but could never fully pull away in the opening 20 minutes. A Youngstown State layup with 3:44 to go in the half gave the visitors their first lead at 27-26, but that lead would be gone 30 seconds later on a Cole Gentry jumper and Wright State never trailed again in the contest despite the game's outcome hanging in the balance for the majority of the night.

Loudon Love finished with a game-high 21 points, including 13 in the second half, along with nine rebounds, two blocks and a steal in his 11th double-digit scoring game of the season and his fifth contest with 20 or more points. Bill Wampler scored 10 of 16 points in the second 20 minutes, while Cole Gentry tallied 11 points, including a late three-pointer to help seal the game in the final minute.

Tanner Holden finished with eight points, while Jaylon Hall tallied seven, as they finished with game-highs of 35 and 36 minutes of action, respectively. Holden also pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, while Hall led the Raiders with four assists.

Wright State led by three at halftime, only to see Youngstown State respond with a 11-5 scoring run to pull even at 45-45 with 15:38 remaining. The Raiders answered with a run of their own, going on an 18-8 scoring run over the next five minutes to pull out to a 10-point advantage. Youngstown State hung around and chipped away at the advantage, closing the Raider lead to five points with two minutes to go before Gentry's three with 48 seconds remaining effectively slammed the door on a Penguin comeback.

The Raiders finished the night shooting 41 percent (27-of-66) from the floor while holding Youngstown State to just 38 percent (26-of-69).  Wright Stat was 39 percent from three-point range (5-of-13), including knocking down four of its seven second half attempts, while holding the Penguins to 4-of-21 shooting (19 percent) from deep.
Wright State hit two more free throws than Youngstown State (20-18) while going to the line 12 more times (30-18). Youngstown State finished with a 45-41 overall rebounding edge, but the Raiders used 16 points from their bench, six blocks and six steals to make up the difference.

Youngstown State had three played finish in double figures, led by Donel Cathcart's 21 points while Darius Quisenberry had 19 points and Naz Bohannon posted 17 points with eight rebounds.
