Wright State men's basketball junior center Loudon Love has been named to the Lou Henson Award mid-season Watch List, announced on Thursday. The award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player.
The fill mid-season list can be seen here.
Love was previously named to the award's preseason watch list, and is averaging 14.3 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game in 12 games this season entering the weekend's action. In Horizon League contests, the preseason first team All-Conference selection has upped his production even more, currently holding a 17.3 points per game and 12.5 rebounds per game pace as the Raiders are off to a 4-0 start in HL play.
He is coming off of a double-double with 23 points and a career-high 20 rebounds in the Raiders' one-point win at Detroit Mercy on Sunday, including doubling down with 15 points and 13 rebounds in the final 20 minutes of action alone. His 20 rebounds were two shy of the Wright State program record and he became the 11th player nationally this season to record a 20-plus rebound game.
Love led the Raiders in scoring most of last season and finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 15.1 points per game average, which ranked seventh in the Horizon League, while his 8.2 rebounds per game average was the third-best in the Horizon last season. A First-Team All-League member last season, Love was a second-team member and Freshman of the Year selection following the 2017-18 campaign. He posted 12 double-doubles last season and averaged 16.6 points in league-only contests.
The 2019-20 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced in April 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia – site of the men's Division I NCAA Basketball Championship.
The Lou Henson Award honors Henson, the former Illinois and New Mexico State coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons. Henson is the winningest coach in Illinois basketball history with 423 victories. During his 21 seasons (1975-1996), Henson led the Fighting Illini to 16 postseason appearances, including 12 NCAA tournaments and a Final Four appearance in 1989.
Henson, who is also the all-time winningest coach in New Mexico State history with 289 victories, is one of only 11 coaches to take two different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His teams have made 19 NCAA appearances and four NIT appearances.
Players on teams from the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.
