Wright State softball earned their second win of the 2020 season and of the UT Martin Huddle House Classic, defeating Purdue Fort Wayne 14-2 on Sunday morning in Martin, Tennessee as the Raiders used an eight run inning in top of the second to take control.
The Raiders' bats started hot, recording two runs in the top of the first inning. A fielding error by the Mastodons allowed freshman
Grace Gressly to reach first and senior
Brianna Hutchinson to advance. A 2-run RBI single up the middle by freshman
Emily Daniel drove in Gressly and Hutchinson. Purdue Fort Wayne answered, led by Madeline Swart's double followed by Morganne Denny's single to drive in Swart. Another Mastodons' single evened the score.
Wright State started the second inning off strong, much like the first, but this time out added eight runs.
Rebekah Lenos started the offense for the Raiders, recording a double followed by a
Brianna Hutchinson's double. Freshman
Grace Gressly added another double, allowing for pinch runner
Erniey Hursey to score.
Raidyn Johnson followed suit of her three pervious teammates, recording a double and driving home Gressly.
Payton Baxter's three-run homerun over the center field fence kept the momentum going for the Raiders. Hutchinson returned to the plate for Wright State and her 2-run RBI single through the right side drove home
Meredith Keel and
Madison Hartman.
The Raiders added another run in the top of the third before scoring three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Lenos started the action for Wright State in the top of the fourth singling to left field, Hutchinson recorded a single before a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance and Lenos to score. Baxter reached on a fielder's choice, advancing all runners and Hutchinson would score.
Senior
Brianna Hutchinson was the only player on either side to go 4-for-4 and recording 3 RBIs. Freshman
Emily Daniel and Sophomore
Madison Hartman both went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs each. Freshman
Payton Baxter went 2-for-4 against the Mastodons but recorded a team leading 4 RBIs.
Sophomore
Olivia Otani recorded the win in the circle for Wright State, striking out three and allowing two runs off of three hits in 5 innings of work. Â
