Women's Soccer suffers heartbreaker in season finale

DAYTON – The Wright State women's soccer season came to a close on Wednesday night as the Raiders fell 2-1 to visiting Northern Kentucky at Alumni Field.
The Raiders (5-10-3, 3-6-2 HL) needed a win and some additional help from around the Horizon League on Wednesday in the final matches of the regular season in order to make the postseason tournament, instead ending head coach Travis Sobers' first season at the helm one spot outside of the six-team bracket in seventh place in the Horizon.
Wednesday night, Northern Kentucky (9-7-2, 7-4-0 HL) tallied a pair of first half goals and never looked back, despite a 52nd minute own goal by the visitors that cut the Raider deficit to one.
The Norse got on the scoreboard in the sixth minute off a goal from Megan Sullivan before she later assisted Lydia Self's 27th minute tally. Early in the second half, Wright State's Michelle Rings took a corner kick opportunity that NKU goalkeeper Mimi Stines pulled down from the traffic in front of net before ultimately having the ball slip out of her hands and across the end line for the Raider goal.
Wright State outshot NKU 16-13, with all 13 of the Norse attempts coming in the first half, while both sides ended the night with six corner kick opportunities. Brittney Petrosky led all players with five shot attempts, while three Raiders – Destiny Johnson, Lauren Borchert and Rings – each had two shot attempts.
NKU was led by Sullivan's four shot attempts, while Stines finished with six saves. Wright State keeper Erin Baker ended the night with six saves of her own in the loss.
