Raiders open HL title defense Saturday afternoon inside McLin

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team opens Horizon League play with a Saturday afternoon showdown with Northern Kentucky as the Raiders set out to defend their Horizon League regular season title. The Raiders and Norse will get underway at 4 p.m. from McLin Gymnasium and will be a be a green out with a Raiders green shirt and glowstick giveaway for fans in attendance.

Wright State is coming off its fourth consecutive 2-1 tournament weekend, tallying wins over Northern Iowa and UTSA at the Marquette Invitational. The Raiders opened the weekend with a four-set win over Northern Iowa before a five-set victory over UTSA closed out the weekend.Â
ON THE HORIZON
Wright State and the rest of the Horizon League begin League play this weekend, with the Raiders looking to defend their HL regular season and tournament titles from the spring. Wright State has won the last two HL regular season titles, dating back to the 2019 campaign, on the way to back-to-back NCAA berths. The Raiders were picked atop the preseason poll with 119 points and 9 first-place votes, while this weekend's opponent, Northern Kentucky, was picked third with 97 points, one point behind second selection UIC. The Norse and Flames each garnered one first-place vote.
KNOW THE FOE
Northern Kentucky begins Horizon League play at 4-5 overall following a pair of losses last weekend at Ball State against the Redbirds. NKU fell Friday night in three sets before dropping a five-setter on Saturday. In non-conference tournament action, the Norse won a pair of matches at the Miami (OH) Invitational and also competed in the Ohio State Invitational and the Cardinal Classic hosted by Louisville. Anna Brinkmann ranks  54th in the country in kills per set at 3.97 and posting double-figure kills in her last eight matches. Over the last four matches, Brinkmann has averaged 4.13 kills/set at a .331 hitting percentage as an outside.
3,000 HANDOUTS
Lainey Stephenson notched her 3,000th career assist on September 11 in the match against Illinois State. Stephenson currently sits sixth all-time in Wright State program history with 3,126 assists entering Saturday's match. Mandy Gels (1999-2002) is the program leader with 5,044 assists in her career.
1,000 MARKS
Celia Powers and Lainey Stephenson both reached a pair of milestones in the September 4 win over Marshall, with Powers recording her 1,000th kill and Stephenson tallying her 1,000th dig. Both milestones came early in the second set.
