Raiders set for 2022 Horizon League Cross Country Championship

DAYTON — The Wright State men's and women's cross country programs will compete in the 2022 Horizon League Championship on Saturday, October 29, at the Oakland University Cross Country Course in Rochester, Mich.Â
The women's 6,000-meter race will commence at 11 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000-meter run at noon. The award ceremony will begin shortly after at 1 p.m. Tickets for the championship event will be $5 per person. Any Horizon League student will be admitted free of charge with a valid Student ID.

CHAMPIONSHIP REWIND
Both the Wright State men's and women's cross country teams turned in sixth-place finishes at last year's Horizon League Championship.Â
Former Raider Abigail Halsey highlighted the meet by winning the conference title with a time of 22:10.6 in the women's 6K. Emma Shigley finished 29th in the race at 24:06.8.Â
Tayton Hess earned 14th overall with a time of 26:26.6 in the men's 8K on his way to earning Second Team All-League honors. Jacob Poling (23, 26:51.2) and Alex McCarty (27, 26:59.2) also finished in the top 30 for the WSU men.Â
LAST TIME OUT
The women's team placed second out of 16 programs in the Jenna Strong Fall Classic at Wilmington College two weekends ago. Five Raiders finished in the top 30 among 150-plus competitors in the 5,000-meter run, led by Alicia Neumeier in eighth place with a time of 19:40.1. Emma Shigley was close behind in 11th at 19:35.3, followed by Emma Johnson in 16th (20:10.6). The duo of Alycea Ruhlen and Anna Johnson were neck-and-neck in 28th and 29th overall with times of 20:43.6 and 20:43.9, respectively.
Most of the Raider men raced at the Bradley Pink Classic on the same date, finishing 27th overall. Seven Raiders posted personal-record times in the men's 8,000-meter run, which included four sub-26:00 marks. Alex McCarty led the pack in 68th place out of 289 competitors with a PR time of 24:35.8, good for the third-fastest mark in school history. Max Pettit finished close behind in 72nd place at 24:37.8, a PR for the senior and fourth in the Raider 8K record list. Patrick Statzer (198, 25:49.6), Tayton Hess (212, 25:57.2), Ethan Neblock (242, 26:20.9), and Alan Fullenkamp (267, 27:21.7) raced to PRs, while Ryan Cooper (244, 26:24.5) and Nathan Sheriff (268, 27:22.0) also represented the Raiders.

Following the Horizon League Championships, the Raiders will compete at the Great Lakes Regional Championship on Friday, November 11, in Terre Haute, Ind., at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. The top two teams from each regional will automatically advance to the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
