CINCINNATI — The Wright State baseball program concluded its 13-game road trip with a 13-4 loss to Xavier on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Park.
The Raiders dropped to 14-16 on the season, while Xavier improved to 17-17 overall.
Starting pitcher
Sam Wirsing (1-3) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and a pair of walks in one inning.
Brock Nartker,
Bradley Deboutte, and
Riley Perlich were tagged for multiple runs out of the bullpen.
Josh Laisure gave up a homer to the first batter he faced but went on to hold the Musketeers scoreless with three strikeouts over the next two innings.
Donnie Nicodemus,
Garret Simpson,
Justin Hornschemeier, and
Henry Von Hollen each had scoreless outings in relief. In total, a season-high nine Raiders made an appearance on the mound.
The Raider finished the day with eight hits and three walks.
Justin Riemer batted 3-for-5 with a double, a walk, and an RBI, while
Drew Baker and
Drew Fleming added RBI singles.
Justin McConnell reached base in his first two plate appearances on a double and a hit by pitch.
The Musketeers reached the scoreboard in the opening inning with a three-run roundtrip off the bat of Tyler DeMartino. WSU reduced its deficit with an RBI single by Baker in the second, but Xavier responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to extend its lead to 5-1.
Xavier broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run double from Jeff Holtz. The Musketeers proceeded to add a run in the fifth on a sac fly and one more in the sixth on their fourth home run of the game.
Trailing 13-1, Baker and
Avery Fisher opened the seventh inning with a walk and hit by pitch. Fleming and Riemer plated the pair on back-to-back RBI singles. WSU tallied one more run in the ninth inning, as
Alec Sayre scored Fleming on an RBI groundout.
The Raiders will return to Nischwitz Stadium for the first time in nearly a month for a three-game series from April 14-16 against Horizon League foe UIC.
