LOUISVILLE, KY – The Wright State men's soccer team battled to a tough, 1-0 defeat on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Bellarmine in the two sides first meetings as Division I foes.
Â
The Raiders (3-5-4) now get set to turn their attention back to Horizon League play, where they'll travel to take on Oakland on Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. start in Michigan.
Â
Bellarmine (3-2-6) got on the board in the first five minutes and made the early goal hold up, while the final minutes also proved pivotal to the outcome. Down to 10 men after a red card in the 80th minute, Wright State gained offensive momentum and had a prime opportunity when Bellarmine keeper Tudor Iordan received a yellow card after taking out a streaking Henry Hutchinson inside the box instead of playing the ball. Conner Osterholt took the penalty kick chance for the Raiders, delivering a line drive to the bottom left of the frame, where Iordan was able to lay out and get a hand on it to deny the opportunity.
Â
The hosts got on the board 4:20 into the contest on a cross from Brock Pope to the far post that found the head of Ben Griffis, who just tucked it inside the crossbar to give Bellarmine the advantage. Wright State finished with four first half shots, including a pair on frame, before doubling up the mark in the second half. Bellarmine finished the night with a 14-8 shot advantage as six Raiders finished with one shot each. Jacob Adams, Noah Boffo and Harrison Rody each tallied shots on goal. Making his first career start, Raider keeper Oscar Juhl-Larsen finished with four saves after the early goal.
Â
Jack Fischer paced Bellarmine with three shots while three players had two shots each for the hosts. Iordan ended his night with four saves for Bellarmine.
