Volleyball welcomes Youngstown State for midweek matchup

DAYTON — The Wright State volleyball team wraps up its three-match homestand on Tuesday night as the Raiders welcome Youngstown State to McLin Gymnasium to begin the second half of Horizon League play. Action is set for a 6 p.m. start on Tueday and fans can follow the action via live stats and watch on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State grabbed a pair of home sweeps over the weekend, taking care of IUPUI on Friday night before dispatching Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday. On Friday, Wright State dominated at the net, finishing with 14 blocks from six different Raiders, paced by Reilly Zegunis' seven block assists. Callie Martin added six block assists and a solo block of her own while Aaliyah Byers stuffed five block assists. Katie Meyer (three block assists), Megan Alders (two block assists, one solo block) and Sam Ott (one block assist) were also in on the action at the net. Zegunis also led the way offensively, finishing with a match-best 12 kills on 14 attempts (.786 percentage) as the lone player on either side with double digit kills. Saturday Callie Martin delivered her ninth double-double of the year with a 12 kill, 11 dig effort while adding a pair of service aces, one solo block and one block assist. Behind Martin, Wright State saw Megan Alders and Aaliyah Byers each finish with nine kills while Sam Ott added six kills and had 13 digs. Jenny Wessling and Andrea Bortulin joined Martin with two service aces each, while Wessling collected a match-best 20 digs and Katie Meyer passed out 34 of the Raiders' 42 assists.
SERIES VS. THE 'GUINS
The Raiders topped Youngstown State in three sets on the road back on September 26. Eight different Raiders recorded kills in the first meeting, paced by an eight-kill night from Reilly Zegunis. Megan Alders tallied seven kills and Callie Martin had six of her own. Wright State now has a 42-12 overall series advantage and has won seven straight and  10 of the last 11 matches overall.
KNOW THE FOES
- Youngstown State enters the week 7-13 overall with a 2-7 Horizon League mark. The Penguins have lost two in row and six of their last seven matches, with the one win in that stretch a four set victory at Purdue Fort Wayne on October 6. Youngstown State has been much better on the road, winning six of its seven matches away from home (4-4 true road, 2-2 neutral matches) but the Penguins have lost three of their last four road contests entering Tuesday night.

Since the start of the 2018 season, Wright State is 54-10 overall in home matches inside McLin Gymnasium after a 21-60 home mark (and just 54 total victories, home or otherwise) from 2011-2016.Â

Individually, Jenny Wessling is ranked No. 11 with her 5.23 digs per set average, while her 361 total digs are No. 13 nationally.Â

Callie Martin enters the weekend with nine double-doubles on the season, including four straight matches and seven of the last nine matches overall. She's recorded 10-plus kills 12 times and has had 10-plus digs in 13 matches overall. She had 12 double-doubles in 2022 and recorded double-digit digs in 26 of her 32 matches last year, including matching her career-best with 23 digs in Wright State's Sept. 17 four-set win over Dayton, while she tallied 10-plus kills in 14 matches a season ago.
ALL(DERS) KILLS
Megan Alders begins the week with 245 kills, just over 50 kills shy of her single season high mark for kills (306) that she set last season. Alders has recorded 200-plus kills three times in her career, with all coming the last three seasons (270 in 2021 and 306 in 2021) after barely missing the mark as a freshman with 197 kills.
