Women's basketball jumps back into HL play to close calendar year

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program closes out the 2023 calendar year with a pair of road contests this weekend as the Raiders head back into Horizon League play, beginning Friday night with a visit to Youngstown State. Friday's game will get started at 6:30 p.m. and fans can follow the action by watching on ESPN+ or following live stats.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State split a pair of games at the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas on December 21 and 22, falling to Wyoming in the opener before finishing the trip with a victory over Presbyterian. Alexis Hutchison finished the Wyoming game 11-of-27 from the floor with a trio of three-pointers, while her seven rebounds also led the Raiders. Kacee Baumhower notched 18 points, including 12 in the second half, while Layne Ferrell finished with 11 points. Rachel Loobie and Lauren Scott each chipped in a bucket for the only other Wright State scoring. In the Friday win, Hutchison and Loobie each finished with 14 points and Baumhower added 12 points as the trio in double digits led nine Raiders in scoring. Hutchison and Loobie both got off to strong starts with seven points each in the first quarter.
HORIZON LEAGUE REWIND
The Raiders are officially done with non-conference action and set for an 18-game Horizon League sprint over the next two-plus months, starting the stretch 1-1 in League play after the early weekend of action. Wright State won its HL opener at home over IUPUI on Nov. 30 as four players scored in double figures, led by Alexis Hutchison with a game-leading 22 points. The Raiders then fell at Purdue Fort Wayne on Dec. 3 despite Hutchison's game-leading 18 points, 13 points from Kacee Baumhower and Layne Ferrell's 12 points.
KNOW THE FOE
- Youngstown State is currently 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the Horizon after early action, with three of its wins coming at home. The Penguins dropped their early HL games at home to Detroit Mercy (by nine points) and at Robert Morris (by two points).
- The Penguins are allowing just 57.2 points per game, the best mark in the Horizon League, but are scoring just 57.2 points offensively, which is last in the HL.

Alexis Hutchison recorded three double-digit scoring games Dec. 18-22, including a career-high 37 points at West Virginia on Dec. 18. Hutchison added a game-high 28 points in Wright State's Las Vegas opener against Wyoming on Dec. 21 before a team-leading 14 points in the Dec. 22 win over Presbyterian. For the week, Hutchison was 27-of-59 from the floor, a 45.7 shooting percentage, while she connected on 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from three-point range and was 14-of-15 (93.3 percent) from the free throw line. She added 19 rebounds, five assists and three steals to her final statline for the week.
