INDIANAPOLIS/DAYTON – Wright State's Mikkel Mathiesen has been named the final Horizon League Golfer of the Week, the League office announced on Wednesday afternoon. It is Mathiesen's second HL honor of the season.
Â
Mathiesen closed out the regular season portion of his senior campaign with a victory at the Wright State Invitational over the weekend, besting teammate Shane Ochs on the fifth playoff hole to claim the title. Mathiesen entered the final round two shots back of the lead and tallied a pair of birdies on the front nine holes before burying a 35-foot putt for birdie on the 18th for a two-over 73 to force the extra holes. He carded a two-over 73 in his first round that featured an eagle three on the par five ninth hole before playing an even par round of 71 on Sunday afternoon, with his two second round birdies canceling out his lone blemish, a double bogey on the second hole, as he played in overcast, wet conditions both days with howling winds throughout the course.
Â
Wright State now gets set to defend its title at the Horizon League Championship next week at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, while Mathiesen will try for his second-straight individual title as well. His final round 65 last spring set the mark for lowest round in Horizon League Championship history, while his three-round score of 203 set a new Horizon League record for lowest 54-hole individual score.
