BATH, MI – Mikkel Mathiesen finished six-under in a tie for fifth individually at the 2023 NCAA Regional to wrap up his season, narrowly missing out on a chance to advance to the championship rounds next week, while Tyler Goecke bounced back with a solid final round to finish four-over and tied for 39th overall.
Â
Mathiesen, who entered Wednesday's final round four-under, birdied the par three second hole but closed his front nine with back-to-back bogeys on the par four eighth and ninth holes to set up his finish. Down the stretch, Mathiesen pared the first three holes of his back nine before three birdies in four holes– on the par four 13th, 14th and 16th – to set up the final holes. Mathiesen tallied a par on the par three 17th and then just missed a would-be birdie putt on the par five 18th and settled for a final par to end his round at two-under with a 69.
Â
Georgia, Illinois, Oregon, Florida and Texas all advanced on the team side of the regional, with Kansas State's Luke O'Neill capturing the lone individual advancing spot to next week's NCAA Championship with his seven-under total score following a two-under final round of his own Wednesday. Georgia's Ben Van Wyk was the individual champion at 10-under for the week.
Â
Goecke jumped 17 spots on the final leaderboard with his second round of 70 in the tournament, as he played steady golf all afternoon with 13 pars across his scorecard. He recorded back-to-back birdies on the par four third hole and par five fourth hole before bogeying the par three fifth hole. Goecke opened his back nine with a birdie on the par four 10th and had a bogey on the par four 15th as the only other blemish on his card.
Â
