Men's Soccer tallies pair of goals for first road win
9/30/2023 10:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer
GREEN BAY – The Wright State men's soccer team used a first half goal Saturday night to play with the lead before a late tally secured the win as the Raiders defeated Green Bay 2-0 for their first road victory of the season.
Â
The Raiders now will have a week off to rest and prepare for a meeting with Robert Morris at home next Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. That match will get underway at 3 p.m. and is expected to be streaked on ESPN+.
Â
Wright State (3-4-3, 2-2 Horizon) got on the board in the 22nd minute off a Cole Werthmuller header tucked inside the right post after an assist from Henry Hutchinson, who made a couple Green Bay (3-3-3, 1-2-1 Horizon) defenders miss along the sideline before sending the cross in that found Werthmuller's head.
Â
The Raiders played from ahead through the break, controlling the time of possession all night and adding the insurance goal in the 79th minute. Brady Shapiro's free kick opportunity found the foot of Hutchinson, who was streaking into the box and redirected the ball past the outstretched arms of Green Bay goalkeeper Tobias Jahn.
Â
Wright State was actually outshot in the match 19-13 with Green Bay pressing looking for a goal in the second half and racking up 10 second half attempts. The Raiders placed four attempts on frame and Green Bay finished with six shots on goal. Werthmuller and Roman Kedgley paced Wright State with three shots each and Reece Allbaugh had two attempts while five other Raiders recorded a shot each. Green Bay was led by Keegan Walker's five shots, only one of which was on goal.
Â
Raider keeper Alessandro Malterer turned away six shots, tied for the second-most he's had in his Wright State career, as he tallied four saves in the second 45 minutes. Jahn finished with two saves while allowing the two goals in net for Green Bay.
