Big nights for Doumbia, Noel lift Raiders past Detroit Mercy

DETROIT – Jack Doumbia scored 16 of his career-high 21 points in the second half and added a career-best 13 rebounds to lead three Raiders in double figures as the Wright State men's basketball team grabbed an 80-72 Horizon League road win at Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon.

Wright State (6-5, 1-1 Horizon) was paced by Brandon Noel's game-best 26 points, his 20th career game with 20 or more points and his seventh such effort this season, as he moved to No. 30 all-time in the Raider scoring list with 1,101 points and is now seventh all-time in Wright State career rebounding with 620 boards.

The Raiders return home for their next two contests, next jumping back to non-conference action with a Wednesday night home matchup against Marshall in a 7 p.m. tipoff inside the Nutter Center.

On Saturday, Wright State took a 12-point lead into the break before rolling off the first 10 points of the second half to lead by 13 points with just over 12 minutes to go before Detroit Mercy (5-6, 1-1 Horizon) made its push. The hosts tallied nine straight points over a two-minute stretch to cut the Raider advantage to four points, but Wright State responded with 12 of the next 16 points to regain control of the contest, closing the afternoon by connecting on 12-of-13 second half free throws to come away with the win.

Noel was efficient, going 11-of-13 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers on the way to his 26 points, adding seven rebounds and a steal, while Alex Huibregtse notched his 11th straight double-digit scoring effort with 17 points, 10 of which came in the final 20 minutes. Doumbia added three blocks to his career day, shooting 50 percent from the floor overall while going 5-of-6 from the free throw stipe.

Logan Woods added nine points on three three-pointers as Wright State connected on eight triples as a group (8-of-19, 42 percent) while shooting 57 percent overall from the floor (28-of-49) and hitting 16-of-19 (84 percent) from the free throw stripe. Defensively, the Raiders held Detroit Mercy to 42 percent overall shooting (28-of-67) with the hosts hitting just five three-pointers (5-of-15, 33 percent) and going to the line 16 times total (11-of-16, 69 percent) but getting to the free throw line just twice in the second half.

Wright State won the rebounding battle, 34-32, and notched 14 assists on the 28 total baskets while tallying 30 points in the paint, aided by Doumbia and Noel.

Detroit Mercy finished with five players in double figures scoring as the hosts got balanced scoring in the loss, paced by Orlando Lovejoy's 14 points.
