Women's Basketball stumbles on Wednesday

DAYTON – The Wright State women's basketball team got off to a slow start on Wednesday night and was unable to recover, as the Raiders fell 72-52 to visiting Youngstown State inside the Nutter Center.

Wright State (15-12, 9-7 Horizon) now gets set for a Saturday afternoon Senior Day contest on Homecoming, as the Raiders welcome Northern Kentucky to the Nutter Center for a 4 p.m. contest. Prior to tipoff, Wright State will celebrate the careers of Layne Ferrell, Alexis Hutchison, Rachel Loobie, Jada Tate, Cara VanKempen and Makira Webster.

On Wednesday, Youngstown State (12-14, 8-8 Horizon) tallied the first eight points of the night and led 26-15 after the opening 10 minutes as the visitors shot 73 percent in the first quarter. The Raiders finished the night shooting just 28.8 percent, their second-lowest shooting game of the season, while connecting on four three-pointers, tied for their lowest mark of the campaign.

Kacee Baumhower had 15 points to lead eight Raiders in the scoring column, tallying 13 points in the second half, while Layne Ferrell also had a double-digit scoring night with a 13-point effort as she added seven rebounds. Three players – Alexis Hutchison, Lauren Scott and Jada Tate - each notched six points, with Hutchison pulling down a game-best eight rebounds while also adding four assists and two steals.

Wright State was 17-of-59 from the floor overall on the way to the 28.8 percent shooting number, tallying the four three-pointers on 32 attempts (12.5 percent). The Raiders were 87.5 percent shooters at the free throw stripe, connecting on 14-of-16 for the night, including an 11-of-11 mark in the third quarter. Aided by the hot start, Youngstown State shot 50 percent overall (30-of-60) and was 8-of-18 (44 percent) from three-point range while going 4-of-7 (57 percent) at the free throw line.
