Men’s Soccer Rallies Late to Tie Against Eastern Illinois

DAYTON – The Wright State men's soccer had a late rally to tie 2-2 against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday evening. Cole Werthmuller added both Raider goals in the final 15 minutes of the match.
Wright State (3-3-1) bested Eastern Illinois (1-3-1) in shots (30-11), shots on goal (11-6), and corner kicks (7-3), while the Panthers put up nine saves to the Raiders four. Cole Werthmuller led the Raiders with ten shots, four on goal, followed by Henry Hutchinson with five shots. Goalkeeper Alessandro Malterer logged all 90 minutes of play, recording four saves against EIU.
Joining Malterer in the complete game were Zakaria Amro and Werthmuller. Behind them was Uleto Fuentes logging 84 minutes and Conner Osterholt with 79 minutes.
The Panthers held a 1-0 advantage at the half, scoring on a penalty kick in the second minute. They further raised the advantage early in the second half with a goal in the low center. Wright State held strong defense, not allowing another EIU shot until the 72nd minute.
The Raiders began their rally in the 77th minute, as Edwin Espinal-Elvir shot a corner kick into the box for Werthmuller to sink a header into the high center. In the 89th minute, Brian Burkett strategically placed a pass to Werthmuller for his second header on the night, finding the back on the net in the top right corner.
Wright State will play again at Milwaukee on Saturday, September 21 at 2 p.m. Fans can keep up with the action through live stats.
