
Raiders Sweep Grizzlies in HL Road Opener

ROCHESTER, MI. — Wright State started their Horizon League road season Friday night with a sweep of the host Oakland Grizzlies, 25-21, 26-24, 25-17.
The Raiders stayed perfect in league action, moving to 3-0 after hitting .386 with 51 kills and just seven attack errors. The Raiders' defense was on point as well, holding Oakland to a .200 hitting percentage.
Wright State used a balanced attack throughout the night, with Reilly Zegunis and Haley Robinson recording 11 kills apiece. Robinson did not commit an attack error on 19 swings, hitting a match-best .579 while adding four blocks. Zegunis hit .476 adding three stuffs of her own, while Abbey Knight added 10 kills and hit .421 while chipping in two service aces and four blocks. Mya Ayro finished with nine kills and Katie Sowko added eight.
Lauren Yacobucci continued to direct the Raider offense, finishing with 41 assists, nine digs and two kills. Taygan Corstange led the defensive effort with a match-high 15 digs.
The Raiders put together 18 kills in the opening set, hitting .295 while holding Oakland to a .182 mark. Wright State created separation down the stretch to grab the opener 25-21 and take an early match lead.
Oakland provided its biggest challenge in the second frame, which featured a late back-and-forth battle. The Golden Grizzlies moved ahead 22-20 before Wright State responded. Kills by Ayro and Sowko evened the score at 22 before the teams traded points to 24-all. A Knight-Zegunis block gave the Raiders set point before Sowko finished the 26-24 victory with a kill. Wright State hit .359 in the frame with 16 kills and only two errors.
Wright State saved its best offensive performance for the final set. The Raiders committed ZERO attack errors, putting down 17 kills on 31 swings for a .548 hitting percentage. After the teams were tied at six, Wright State began pulling away behind kills from Robinson, Knight and Zegunis. The Raiders eventually stretched the advantage to six at 18-12 and never looked back, closing out the sweep with a 25-17 victory.
Wright State continues its road trip Saturday afternoon, traveling to Cleveland State for a 4 p.m. first serve.
