Raiders sweep NIU in Horizon League opener

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team opened Horizon League play with a straight-set victory on Friday night, sweeping Northern Illinois 3-0 inside the McLin Gymnasium. The win marks the 100th of head coach Travers Green's career.

Wright State (6-5, 1-0 HL) will be back in action Saturday afternoon against Northern Illinois. First serve is set for 2 p.m.

The Raiders controlled the match from the outset, taking the opening set 25-21 before earning a 25-19 victory in the second set. Wright State then closed the night with a 25-15 third-set win to complete the sweep.

Wright State hit .402 as a team and recorded 55 kills while limiting NIU to a .179 attacking percentage. The Raiders also held advantages in assists (53-32), digs (57-41) and blocks (4-2).

The Raiders were especially efficient offensively, hitting .412 in the opening set, .349 in the second and .457 in the third. Wright State sided out at a 77 percent rate in the first set, 78 percent in the second and 75 percent in the third while never trailing after the midway point of any set.

Reilly Zegunis paced the offense with a match-high 14 kills while hitting .520 and adding a pair of blocks. Katie Sowko added 14 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while Mya Ayro finished with 12 kills and hit .556. Abbey Knight chipped in six kills, and Haley Robinson added six more as five Raiders recorded at least six kills.

Lauren Yacobucci directed the offense with 46 assists while adding two kills and 10 digs for a double-double. Taygan Corstange anchored the back line with a match-high 19 digs, while Greta McKee collected 11 digs as Wright State placed four players in double figures defensively.

After taking the first two sets, the Raiders raced out to a 5-0 lead in the third and never allowed NIU closer than three points the rest of the way. Wright State extended the lead to 15-8 midway through the frame before closing the match on a 10-7 run, capped by a match-ending kill from Haidyn Sokoloski.

Ava Grevengoed led NIU with 11 kills, while Delaney Steers added five kills. Charlotte Gramzow recorded 32 digs and Viktoria Djukic finished with 34 assists for the Huskies.
