Raiders Rally to Defeat Dayton in Five Sets Behind Ayro's 23 Kills

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team battled back from a second-set setback and closed the match with a dominant fifth set on Sunday afternoon, defeating Dayton 3-2 inside the Nutter Center.

Wright State (3-3) will hit the road and head to the Steel City for the Pittsburgh Tournament September 11-13. The Raiders will face off against High Point on Friday at 4 p.m., Jacksonville on Saturday at 2 p.m., and Pittsburgh on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Wright State took the opening set 25-22 before Dayton answered with a 27-25 win in the second set. The Raiders regained control with a 25-22 victory in the third set, but Dayton forced a deciding frame with a 25-21 fourth-set win. Wright State left little doubt in the fifth set, racing to an 8-3 lead at the side switch and finishing off a 15-7 victory to secure the match.

The Raiders hit .211 as a team and finished with 64 kills while recording 10 team blocks. Wright State's best offensive set came in the decisive fifth frame, when the Raiders hit .400 and sided out on all eight Dayton serves.

Mya Ayro led the way with a match-high 23 kills while adding 14 digs for a double-double. Reilly Zegunis added 12 kills and five blocks, while Katie Sowko recorded 11 kills and 17 digs. Haley Robinson chipped in nine kills, and Abbey Knight finished with 11 kills and five blocks.

Lauren Yacobucci directed the offense with 44 assists and added 13 digs for a double-double. Taygan Corstange anchored the back line with 20 digs as Wright State finished with 80 digs in the victory.

A key stretch in the fourth set helped force the deciding frame, but the Raiders responded in the fifth by scoring six of the first seven points and never allowing Dayton closer than four points the rest of the way. Wright State closed the afternoon with four of the final five points, capped by a match-ending block from Knight and Robinson.

Kamryn Hunt paced Dayton with 21 kills, while Sidney Sprada added 16 kills. Rylee Sloss recorded 30 assists, and Natalie Harrington added 20 assists for the Flyers.
