Women's Soccer Falls to Butler on Penalty Kicks

Box Score

The Wright State women's soccer team ended their season with a valiant effort against Butler Saturday at Alumni Field, playing to a 2-2 tie after two overtimes before falling 4-3 on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Tournament.

The Bulldogs started the scoring just 1:38 into the contest when Jenny Southard took a pass from teammate Angie Muir and redirected the ball past the keeper for the early 1-0 lead.

The Raiders got on the board 7:23 into the second half when senior midfielder Jodie Shoaf took a loose ball off the foot of Jess Rooma and beat the keeper from ten yards out for her fourth goal of the season. The Green and Gold added their second tally of the game just five minutes later when forward Jen Hansen took a pass from senior Carlin Lucente and headed it past a sprawling BU goalkeeper, beating her to the far post for the 2-1 Raider lead. The goal was Hansen's fourth of 2006.

Just over one minute later, Butler's Carrie Twyman broke away from the Raiders defense and beat WSU netminder Steph Comisar one-on-one to draw the game even at 2-2. Angie Muir was credited with her second assist of the game on the play.

After playing two overtimes, the game ended in a tie and headed to a regulation shootout. The Raiders were able to make three out of five shots as Lucente, Amy Miller, and Lorrin Bertsch made the first three attempts. Butler was able to make their four attempts to advance in the tournament.

Wright State senior goalkeeper Steph Comisar made one save in 110 minutes of action as the Raiders outshot the Bulldogs by a margin of 31-6. Neither team held an advantage in corner kicks as each team took five.

Comisar ends her career as the career leader in minutes played (6677), shutouts (23), and goals against average (1.01). Comisar also ranks tied for third in saves with 287 and fourth in goals allowed with 75.

Wright State ends their season with a final record of 12-3-4, tying a program-best in wins. Seniors Lucente, Hansen, Shoaf and Steph Comisar ended their careers with 40 victories while wearing the Green and Gold.
