For the second straight game, the Wright State women's basketball team had the lead at halftime, only to see it slip away as Horizon League leader Green Bay outscored the Raiders 29-15 the final 11:19 in winning 67-53 at the Nutter Center Saturday afternoon.
Wright State had the advantage for most of the first half and was up as much as 16-11 following a Whitney Lewis three with 6:05 remaining. The margin was again five as Kanisha Ward connected on a triple two minutes later, but that turned out to be the last field goal of the half for the Raiders as the Phoenix closed the period with a 7-3 run, capped off with a Rachel Porath three in the final seconds, to trail just 22-21 at the break.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half as WSU was at 26 percent while UWGB was at 30. The Raiders, though, were six of seven from the foul compared to the Phoenix hitting its only attempt.
The teams were tied twice early in the second half until Green Bay went in front at 31-28 on a Kayla Groh jumper and a Kati Harty foul shot. Harty hit a later three and had a fast-break layup to make it 38-32, but threes by Steph Comisar and Tyanda Hammock knotted the game again with 11:27 remaining.
Green Bay, though, went back in front to stay with six straight points, the last four coming from Rachel Porath and the margin grew to 50-40 on three by Harty and Amanda Popp.
Wright State cut the deficit in half on two Lewis free throws and another Hammock three, but could get no closer as the Phoenix used a 13-5 burst, five by Porath, to go up 63-50 with less than a minute to play.
The Raiders could never get on track offensively the entire day as they shot 27 percent in the second half to finish at 27 percent overall while Green Bay found its stroke in the final 20 minutes, hitting for 62 percent, including six of 10 from behind the arc, to end up at 45 percent altogether.
WSU dominated on the boards 45-31, including a 21-9 edge on the offensive end, which resulted in a 17-11 advantage in second-chance points, but the Phoenix countered by forcing 19 turnovers and committing only 12 in holding a 19-9 edge in points off of turnovers. Green Bay also had a 26-14 margin in points in the paint as the Raiders finished the day with more threes (8) than twos (7).
Sierra Crayton led all scorers with 15 for WSU and had seven rebounds while Hammock added 11 points, five boards and four assists, Comisar 10 points and Lewis seven points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Porath led Green Bay (17-3, 8-0 Horizon) with 14 points, nine coming in the second half, while Popp had 13 along with five rebounds and four assists. Nicole Soulis had 11 points and six boards, Harty with all nine of her bench points coming after halftime, and Natalie Berglin nine assists to go with her seven points.
Wright State, now 5-14 overall and 3-5 in the Horizon League, starts the second round of League play with three straight on the road, starting on Saturday, February 3, at Butler. Game time is 6:00.
