The Wright State women's basketball team led much of the game, but managed just one field goal over the final 10:17 as the Miami RedHawks closed the contest with a 21-8 run to pull out a 63-54 decision over the Raiders Wednesday night at Millett Hall.
WSU scored the first eight points of the game, half of those coming from Sierra Crayton, before Miami finally broke through on an Ashley Hawkins jumper at the 15:16 mark. That basket, however, started the RedHawks on a 9-0 run to give Miami the lead for the first time.
A Whitney Lewis three, though, put the Raiders back ahead and the margin grew to as much as 21-11 on a Lewis basket with 5:02 remaining in the half, thanks in part to six more Crayton points. Miami, however, ended the half with a 10-3 run and went back ahead 30-27 three minutes into the second half on nine points from Jenna Schone to start the period.
A pair of three-pointers from Kanisha Ward along with a Shey Peddy layup again gave Wright State the lead at 35-30 and the Raiders stayed in front until a Schone three tied the game again at 42 at the 12:03 mark.
Peddy connected on a three from the right corner to break the tie with 10:17 left, but that turned out to be the final basket for the Raiders until Peddy hit another triple in the final minute. A Lewis foul shot made it a four-point game at the 9:41 mark, but Miami went in front to stay by scoring 13 unanswered points over a 4:40 span to go up 55-46.
The Raiders shot 47 percent over the final 20 minutes to end up at 38 percent overall, but Miami was even hotter, hitting for 60 percent in the second half to finish at 51 percent for the game.
Four Wright State players scored in double figures as Lewis, playing in her first game of the season due to a preseason injury, along with Ward and Peddy each had 12. Crayton added a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds.
Amanda Jackson and Schone each had 20 to pace Miami (3-1), Schone scoring 15 in the second half and Jackson 13.
Wright State, now 0-4 on the season, heads West this week to take part in the Cal Poly Holiday Beach Classic. The Raiders will face the host Mustangs on Saturday, November 24, at 7:30 Eastern followed by North Dakota State on Sunday, November 25, at 5:00 Dayton time.
