Women's Soccer Routs Detroit in HL Quarterfinals

Box Score

The Wright State women's soccer team opened up Horizon League Tournament play with a 6-0 victory over Detroit on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The third-seeded Raiders tallied three goals in each half and held the sixth-seeded Titans off the scoreboard to set a new school record for wins in a season with 13.

Wright State got the scoring started in the 17th minute when Jess Rooma connected from the top of the 18-yard box. The junior First Team All-League performer set a shot into the top corner of net to give WSU an early 1-0 lead. Assisting on the goal was a pair of All-Newcomer Team selections, Jen Agueci and Amber Kasmer.

The Raiders kept the pressure on and connected on another tally just five minutes later when Kasmer corralled a long pass from Megan Mattioda and sent a one-touch pass to Amy Miller in the box. Miller then sent a blast into the back of the net from 18 yards out. Mattioda and Kasmer were each credited with an assist on the goal.

The in the 28th minute, Agueci netted a goal of her own when she stole the ball from a Detroit defender and tallied an unassisted marker.

The Raiders then started the second half with a quick goal, this time off the head of Rooma. Mattioda teed up a corner kick and sent it sailing towards the six-yard box. Rooma dove towards the ball and headed it past a diving UDM keeper. The assist was the second of the match for Mattioda and the goal was the second of the day for Rooma.

The fifth goal was scored when Mattioda sent a long pass towards the goal and freshman Jenna Cooper headed it into the net at the 55:47 mark. It was the second goal of the year for Cooper and gave Mattioda her seventh assist of 2007.

The scoring was capped in the 84th minute when freshman Trisha Stevens hit a ball from 30 yards out and snuck it into the upper corner of the goal. It was the first career goal for Stevens and gave WSU their first six-goal match since 2004 when they defeated Cleveland State by a score of 6-0.

Two Raider keepers combined for the shutout against the Titans as Angie Baker close out the contest with 13 minutes of scoreless play.

The three assists in the match for Mattioda move her into fifth on the career assists list at Wright State with 18 total assists. With two assists in the match, Kasmer moved up to fifth on the single-season points list with 29 points during her rookie campaign.

In the match, WSU held the edge in shots (15-8), shots on goal (9-1) and held a slight edge in corner kicks (2-1). UDM keepers made three saves in the match and the two teams combined for only 16 fouls in the contest.

Wright State (13-5-1) will play the winner of the Loyola/Green Bay match that was to be played on Saturday evening in Chicago. The match will be played at the highest remaining seed in the tournament and the times will be announced for each game on Monday afternoon.
