The Wright State women's basketball team bounced back in a big way from Thursday's night setback at Green Bay as the Raiders jumped out to a 25-10 lead and never looked back as they posted a 65-51 decision at Milwaukee Saturday afternoon, their first win at the Klotsche Center since 1996.
WSU led just 11-10 with 13:42 to go in the first half, but the Raiders followed with 14 straight points, six coming from Brittney Whiteside, to take control of the contest. An Aubrey Hampton three with nine seconds left drew the Panthers to within nine, but Whiteside's halfcourt three to beat buzzer gave Wright State a 32-20 halftime advantage.
The Raiders shot 50 percent in the first half compared to 30 percent for UWM and forced the Panthers into 16 turnovers while committing 10, resulting in a 13-3 differential in points off of turnovers.
A Danielle Duncan layup extended the margin to 43-25 with 14:23 remaining, but Milwaukee closed the gap to eight with a 12-2 run, including two threes from Emily Markert.
An Erica Richardson layup followed by a Steph Comisar three, however, pushed the lead back up to 13 and the Raiders led by as much as 60-40 on a Whitney Lewis three at the 6:14 mark.
Wright State shot 49 percent for the game to Milwaukee's 35 percent, held a 34-32 rebounding edge, led 22-7 in points off of turnovers and outscored the Panthers in the paint 36-18 in winning for the first time at the Klotsche Center since a 60-47 decision on February 10, 1996.
Whiteside led all scorers with 19 points while Comisar added 13, eight in the second half, and Whitney Lewis chipped in 10. Richardson and Tyanda Hammock each had eight points off the bench.
Traci Edwards paced Milwaukee (12-15, 8-6 Horizon) with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Wright State, now 8-17 overall and 6-8 in the Horizon League, returns home for the final two games of the regular season, taking on Cleveland State on Thursday, March 1, at 8:00 and Youngstown State on Saturday, March 3, at 1:00. Those game times have been changed due to the Raider men's team hosting the second and semifinal rounds of the Horizon League Tournament next weekend.
