Softball Outslugs Green Bay for Series Sweep

Wright State clubbed four home runs on the day and Jamie Perkins shut out Green Bay over the final three innings as the Raiders completed the series sweep with a 13-8 Horizon League win over the Phoenix Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.
Green Bay scored an unearned run in the first, only to see the Raiders explode for three home runs and six runs overall in their half of the inning. Perkins led off with a home run to center, her fifth of the season, and after Louie Haney reached on an infield single, a Jherica Williams double gave WSU the lead. One out later, Allison Cox smacked her fifth home run, a two-run blast to left center, and the Raiders closed out the inning as Justine Shilt singled and came in on Mollie Berry's second round tripper of the year to center.
Missy Schleicher cut the deficit to 6-3 with a two-run single in the second, but Wright State responded with three more in the bottom of the frame, two as a result of a Williams RBI single and a Cox double.
The Phoenix, though, trimmed the margin to 9-8 in the third with five runs, including a Schleicher grand slam to left. Green Bay then had runners in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth, but Raider pitchers Ashleigh Jackson and Perkins were able to escape the threat each time.
Green Bay again threatened in the sixth as Jenna Woepse led off with a hit and advanced to third with no outs on a wild pitch and a stolen base, but again Perkins pitched out of the jam as shortstop Kristen Bradshaw turned a double play on a line drive off the bat of Melani Niederer, retiring Woepse at third.
The Raiders added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Bradshaw hit a three-run home run to right center, her sixth of the season, followed by Bridget Henry and Shilt hittting back-to-back doubles to produce another run.
The series sweep marks the first time that Wright State has taken all three games in a weekend set from a Horizon League opponent since the League went to that format starting with the 2003 season.
Jackson (5-5) picked up the win, striking out three in two innings while Perkins earned her second save in throwing three scoreless innings. Perkins led the way offensively with three hits and three runs scored, Bradshaw had two hits, three RBI and three runs scored and Cox added two hits and three RBI.
Schleicher paced Green Bay (6-15, 0-5 Horizon) with two hits and six RBI while Woepse, Niederer and Vanessa Lefan also had two hits.
Wright State, which reaches the .500 mark for the first time this season at 16-16 overall and 5-2 in the Horizon League, starts a nine-game road swing Tuesday with a 3:00 doubleheader at Toledo.
