Women Stay Perfect in League with Win Over Cleveland State

Box Score

Jennifer Gilbert connected on her first career goal in the 69th minute and Meghan Hackerson made four saves to help the Wright State women's soccer team stay perfect in Horizon League play, defeating Cleveland State 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Raiders got the scoring started in the 2nd minute when Bekah Bonny connected for the fourth straight contest with a marker. The sophomore took a crossing pass from Brittany Persaud and converted the shot from eight yards out to the far post. It was the fifth goal of the year for Bonny and the third assist of the season for Persaud.

The Vikings (1-9, 0-1 Horizon) tied the match up with a goal of their own in the 12th minute when Marley Greiner struck from 22 yards out. Greiner took the ball at midfield, dribbled down the pitch and launched a shot into the top-right corner of the net, just over the outstretched arms of WSU goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson.

The Raiders almost connected again in the first half when Amber Kasmer took a shot from the right flank that was headed for the corner, but Kelly Zinkiewich made a diving stab and knocked the ball just wide to keep the contest knotted at 1-1.

WSU held a 6-3 edge in shots in the opening frame and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Three of the WSU shots were on net in the opening half, while Hackerson made one save in the opening 45 minutes.

The Green and Gold retook the lead in the second half when Jennifer Gilbert netted her first career marker at the 69th minute. The rookie connected on a shot from five yards out off of a beautiful crossing pass from Morgan Butler. The play unfolded when Jen Agueci found Butler streaking down the sideline, as both players were credited with an assist on the play.

Hackerson made three saves in the second half to keep the Vikings off of the scoreboard and WSU held an 8-5 edge in shots, ending the match with a 14-8 advantage.

Wright State (5-4-2, 3-0 Horizon) will return to action on Wednesday, September 30, as they travel to Indiana State for a 7:00 tilt.
