Down 7-3 in the fifth, the Wright State softball team scored six runs in the final three innings, including three with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, to pull out a 9-8 victory over Rutgers at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights scored twice in the second before the Raiders scored a run in the third. With two outs and no one on, Louie Haney singled through the left side, stole second and went to third as Kristen Bradshaw singled down the left field line. Bradshaw then stole second and a fielding error by the shortstop on the play allowed Haney to score.
Rutgers extended the lead to 4-1 in the fourth until WSU answered with two of its own in the frame as Jamie Perkins followed with a two-run homer to left center, her first of the season.
Back came the Scarlet Knights with three in the fifth while the Raiders tallied a pair of runs in the inning. Malerie Klingler drove in the first with a fielder's choice and Ashley Schramm had an RBI double for the second.
Wright State cut the deficit to 8-6 with a run in the sixth, taking advantage of two Rutgers errors, before winning the game with three in the seventh.
The Raiders loaded the bases with one out on hits from Perkins, Schramm and Katie Kine, but Justine Shilt popped up for the second out. Haney, though, kept the rally alive by getting hit by a pitch to force in a run and pinch-runner Michelle Baker scored on a wild pitch as the other two runners advanced to second and third. China Frost then delivered the game winner, a single down the left field line.
Melanie Heyne (1-3) picked up the win in relief, allowing just one run in 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Offensively, Perkins finished with three hits and two runs scored while Schramm went three-for-three and Frost, Berry and Kine each collected two hits.
Wright State (5-7) returns to action next weekend at the Bulldog Classic in Starkville, Mississippi. The Raiders face Mississippi Valley State on Friday (2:00) and Troy (11:00) and host Mississippi State (5:00) on Saturday, with the championship and consolation games set for Sunday.
