The Wright State softball team moved into second place in the Horizon League standings with a sweep of Valparaiso Tuesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field, winning the first game 5-4 and taking the nightcap 6-2.
WSU opened the game one scoring with a pair of runs in the first. With one out, Louie Haney singled up the middle and Justine Shilt and Jamie Perkins both walked to load the bases with two out. Haney scored on an infield hit by Mollie Cox and Allison Cox followed by reaching base on an error as Shilt scored to make it 2-0.
The Raiders added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Kristen Bradshaw scored the first run as she singled, stole second and came in on Louie Haney's double down the left field line. After a China Frost infield hit, both runners were brought home on a two-run single up the middle from Shilt.
Valparaiso tallied a run in the fifth and tacked on three more in the seventh, but Cox induced Lisa DeBruzzi to pop out to end the game.
Cox (8-3) earned the win by going 5.1 innings, 4.1 at the start and the final inning to end the game, allowing no runs in scattering five hits and two walks while striking out three. Offensively, Haney, Shilt and Berry each had two hits, with Haney scoring twice.
Just like the first game, the Raiders were the first to score in game two, picking up a run in the first as Bradshaw reached on an error, went to third on hits from Haney and Frost and later scored on a wild pitch.
Valparaiso (29-15, 9-5 Horizon) tied it with a run in the third, only to see WSU answer with a run of its own in its half of the third as Bradshaw doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a Haney bunt and scored as Frost grounded out to second.
Wright State made it 4-1 with two in the fifth on a Frost grounder and a Shilt squeeze bunt and tacked on two more in the sixth on a Haney two-run double to left.
Melanie Heyne (9-12) went the first four innings for the win while Cox picked up her fourth save of the year by pitching the final three innings. Haney went a perfect three-for-three with two RBI and a run scored while Bradshaw scored three times and Frost knocked in two.
Wright State (22-24-1, 13-7 Horizon) wraps up the three-game series with the Crusaders with a single game Wednesday at 2:00.
