Softball Completes Series Sweep of Valparaiso with 10-5 Victory

A nine-run third inning proved to be the difference as the Wright State softball team completed a Horizon League series sweep of Valparaiso with a 10-5 decision in the series finale Wednesday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.
The Raiders sent 13 batters to the plate in the third as 10 reached base and seven recorded a hit. The nine runs are the second most scored in an inning by Wright State this season behind the 11 fourth-inning runs scored in the second game with Detroit on March 27.
Before the big inning, Wright State started the scoring with a run in the first. Kristen Bradshaw led off with a single and after Justine Shilt sacrifice fly to left brought in Bradshaw.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Valparaiso (29-16, 9-6 Horizon) took a 4-1 lead in the top half of the second inning. Tori Brown tripled in two runs and came in on a double by Sara Strickland, who later scored on a Sadie Connor hit.
Wright State recaptured the lead in the bottom of the third with their nine-run inning. Haney and Frost led the inning off with back-to-back singles and Shilt loaded the bases by reaching on an error. An infield ground ball by Allison Cox brought in Haney and Jamie Perkins then followed up with an RBI double of her own to give WSU the lead for good. After Perkins' RBI, Wright State sent seven more batters to the plate and scored five additional runs.
Melanie Heyne (10-12) took it from there as she went the final 5.1 innings for the win, allowing an unearned run in scattering five hits while striking out two. Offensively, Haney, Frost, Perkins and Briauna Birl each had two hits with Bradshaw and Haney scoring twice.
Wright State (23-24-1, 14-7 Horizon) closes out the home portion of its schedule Friday with a single game against Urbana starting at 5:00.
