Box Score A goal early in the second half proved to be the difference as the Wright State women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Central Michigan in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
Chelsi Abbott scored the only goal of the contest 12:57 into the second half as Kaely Schlosser drew out WSU goalkeeper Brooke McCurdy and fed Abbott, who tapped in the goal.
Central Michigan outshot Wright State 17-5, including 12-3 in the second half. Morgan Butler accounted for two of those five shots for the Raiders while McCurdy finished with five saves in her collegiate debut.
The matchup featured two teams expected to place high in their respective conferences this season as Wright State (11-7-2, 6-2 Horizon in 2009) is picked to finish second in the Horizon League while CMU (17-4-3, 9-0-2 MAC in 2009) is the preseason favorite in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas, who return 10 starters in 2010, won the MAC regular-season and tournament titles last season and advanced to the NCAA Second Round, knocking off #24 Purdue in the opening round.
Wright State continues its season-opening six match road swing on Tuesday, August 24, as the Raiders head to Champaign, Illinois, to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini. Match time is 8:00 Eastern.
