There was no shortage of offense as the Wright State softball team split a doubleheader at Valparaiso Saturday, the Raiders taking the first game 11-9 while the Crusaders won the second 9-7.

Valpo jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game with three runs in the first and two more in the second before WSU answered with three in the top of the fourth. After Kortney Tackett walked and Alexis Mayle doubled to center, Macey Gunther followed with her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to left.

The Crusaders went up 9-3 with four in their half of the fourth, but back came the Raiders with two in the fifth on solo home runs from Becka Peterson and Hanna Floyd. It was the third homer of the year for Peterson and the second for Floyd.

Wright State then gained the lead at 10-9 with five in the sixth. After loading the bases on a Jess Gorman walk and singles by Peterson and Floyd, Tackett cleared them with a grand slam home run to center, her first of the season, to tie the score. Gunther later singled in Angie Clark with the go-ahead run.

The Raiders picked up an insurance run in the seventh on a Floyd RBI single, her fourth hit of the game.

Gunther and Peterson each had three hits for WSU, with Peterson scoring three times.

Wright State carried that offensive momentum into the second game, tallying three runs in the first. Doubles by Gunther and Libby Pfeffer resulted in the first run with Peterson later hitting a two-run home run to right center, her second of the day and fourth of the season.

Valparaiso scored three runs in both the first and second, only to see WSU cut the deficit to 6-5 with a pair of runs in the third. The Crusaders, however, extended the margin to 9-5 with two in the third and another in the fifth.

The Raiders made it 9-7 in the sixth on a Peterson two-run single, but could get no closer.

Peterson, who was a perfect five-for-five on the day, drove in four runs in the nightcap while Pfeffer, Reagan Stofcheck and Tackett each had two hits.

Wright State (7-21, 3-2 Horizon) and Valparaiso (8-17, 2-3 Horizon) close out the series with a single game Sunday at 2:00 Eastern.
