Wright State swept a twinbill with Detroit Saturday at the WSU Softball Field, taking the first game 5-2 before rallying in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory in the second game.
The Titans scored a pair of runs in the first inning of the opener, but that turned out to be the only runs given up by Raider starter Ashley Sharp (4-10), who struck out three in a complete-game effort.
WSU tied the game with two runs in the third. Jess Gorman was hit by a pitch to start the frame and advanced to third on a Libby Pfeffer bunt and a Reagan Stofcheck ground out. After Becka Peterson walked, Kortney Tackett tripled to right to drive in Gorman and pinch-runner Rachael Oakley.
Wright State then took the lead for good with a run in the fourth as Angie Clark had a bunt single, went to second on a Sharp bunt and scored as Gorman singled up the middle.
The Raiders rounded out the scoring in the fifth on a two-run single by Hanna Floyd.
WSU carried that momentum into the second game in scoring four runs in the second. With one out, hits by Floyd, Clark and Alexis Mayle produced a run and both Clark and Mayle moved into scoring position as the Titan tried to retire Floyd at the plate. After a wild pitch and a Honnah Susor RBI single made it 3-0, the final run scored as Pfeffer doubled in Susor.
Detroit cut the deficit to 4-2 with single runs in the third and fourth, but the margin was still the same as the Titans had a runner on first with two outs in the seventh. Detroit, though, used a double, a passed ball, an intentional walk and two singles to push across three runs to go up 5-4.
Wright State, however, would answer with two runs in its half of the seventh to pull out the victory. With one out, Pfeffer hit a deep fly ball to left that went off the top of the fence and by the left fielder for a triple. After two intentional walks loaded the bases, Tackett was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run and Floyd knocked in the winning run on a fielder's choice.
Susor, Pfeffer and Floyd each had two hits in the second game.
Wright State (15-26, 10-4 Horizon) visits crosstown rival Dayton for a single game on Tuesday, April 21, before hosting UIC in a key Horizon League series Friday and Saturday, April 24-25.
