The Wright State softball team split its opening two games of the season Friday at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational, falling to Wichita State 10-2 before rallying for a 4-3 win in eight innings over host Houston.
In the first game of the day, Wichita State scored seven times in the second and added another in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
The Raiders broke through with two runs in the fifth, rallying after the first two batters were retired. Kate Pfeffer started the rally with a walk and after Ashton Salyers reached on an error, both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. After Libby Pfeffer walked to load the bases, Honnah Susor delivered a two-run double down the right field line.
The Shockers, though, answered with two of thier own in the bottom of the fifth to round out the scoring.
In the second game, a two-run home run by Shelby Miller gave Houston a 2-0 lead in the fourth and it remained that way until WSU tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. A Becka Peterson walk and a Macy Cook single along with a wild pitch put two runners into scoring position and both came in on a two-run double off the bat of Alexis Mayle.
Wright State took the lead in the eighth as Cook drove in the first run and Salyers later singled in an insurance run.
The Cougars tallied a run in their half of the eighth, but Ashley Sharp (1-1) held on for the complete-game win.
Susor and Salyers paced the Raider offense with two hits each.
