The Wright State softball team defeated Houston 8-5 in its final game of the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational Sunday afternoon.
The Raider offense came alive early, scoring four runs in the top of the first. A wild pitch allowed the first run to score and, with the aid of two errors, three grounders plated the other three runs.
Houston cut the deficit in half with two runs in the second and drew to within one with another run in the sixth before WSU picked up four insurance runs in the seventh. Alexis Mayle singled in Becka Peterson with the first run and after another scored on a wild pitch, an Ashton Salyers infield hit and an error produced the final two runs.
The Cougars had a two-run home run in their half of the seventh, but Ashley Sharp (2-2) got the final out for the complete-game victory.
Macy Cook led the Raider offense with three hits and two runs scored while Mayle had two hits and two RBI and Honnah Susor and Savanna Brown each had two hits.
Wright State (2-3) is off until the Raiders compete in the Hilltopper Spring Fling in Bowling Green, Kentucky, February 24-26.
