For the second straight day, the Wright State softball team posted a one-run win over Dayton on Wednesday, this time rallying from deficits of 4-0 and 5-4 to defeat the Flyers 6-5 in the home opener at the WSU Softball Field.
The Flyers built a 4-0 lead with two runs in both the second and third before the Raiders answered with four in the bottom of the third. After singles by Savanna Brown and Honnah Susor started the frame, Macey Gunther doubled in pinch-runner Karalyn Rhodeback with the first run. Libby Pfeffer then singled in Susor and after a double steal made it 4-3, a hit behind second by Ashton Salyers tied the game.
Dayton, though, went back in front with a run in the fourth and it stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Susor walked and Gunther had a hit to right to put runners on the corners. Pfeffer then bunted one in front of the plate and the catcher dropped the ball in an attempt to get Susor at the plate, tying the game.
WSU came up with the game-winner an inning later. Macy Cook led off with a walk and pinch-runner Kate Pfeffer advanced to second on a wild pitch. Becka Peterson then delivered a double just inside the left field line to drive in Pfeffer with the winning run.
Ally Russell (2-2) picked up the win with a perfect seventh in relief of starter Ashley Sharp, striking out one while at the plate, Gunther and Pfeffer had two hits and Susor scored twice.
Wright State (5-12) opens Horizon League play this weekend as the Raiders host Detroit Mercy in a three-game series, starting with a single game on Friday at 6:00.
