Softball Drops Pair to Detroit Mercy

Both games came down to the final inning, but the Wright State softball team came out on the short end of both in Horizon League action Saturday against Detroit Mercy at the WSU Softball Field, with the Titans taking the opener 1-0 and the second game 9-7 in nine innings.

The lone run of the opener came in the seventh as Courtney Gilbert doubled in Cheyenne Willeford, who had singled and stole second.  Libby Pfeffer had three hits for the Raiders while in the circle, Ally Russell scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort, striking out two.

The offense came alive quickly in the second game as WSU scored six in the bottom of the first to erase an early 1-0 deficit.  Doubles by Honnah Susor and Vivi Marquez produced the first two runs and, after a Macy Cook RBI single, a double from Becka Peterson made it 4-1.  Pfeffer then knocked in the final two runs with a hit to center.

Detroit Mercy chipped away at the margin to tie the game at 6-6 in the third before Wright State went back in front with a run in the bottom of the frame.

The Titans, though, again tied it in the seventh and went ahead for good with two runs in the ninth.  The Raiders threatened in the bottom of the ninth with the potential tyiing runs in scoring position, but came away empty.

Pfeffer capped a strong day at the plate with two hits and two RBI in the second game while Macey Gunther had two hits as did Cook.

Wright State (6-15, 1-2 Horizon) heads to Columbus on Wednesday, March 29, for a 5:00 doubleheader at Ohio State.
