The long ball was on display Sunday afternoon as a pair of two-run home runs helped lift the softball team to a 5-3 win in eight innings against Green Bay in De Pere, Wisconsin, completing a sweep of the three-game Horizon League series.
The Phoenix scored a run in the fourth to go up 1-0, only to see the Raiders tie it in the top of the fifth as Macy Cook doubled to left and Kelly Dillow drove in pinch-runner Karalyn Rhodeback with a single through the left side of the infield.
WSU went in front for the first time in the sixth with the first of its two two-run home runs. With one out, Honnah Susor reached on an infield hit and, one out later, Alexis Mayle connected on a two-run shot to left, her first of the season.
Green Bay, however, scored single runs in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings, a tie that Raiders broke in the eighth. Vivi Marquez led off with a walk and, two batters later, Becka Peterson blasted a two-run home run to left center, her first of the year.
Ashley Sharp (6-8) then closed out the win by retiring the Phoenix in order in the bottom of the eighth.
Susor and Dillow each had two hits for Wright State (9-16, 4-2 Horizon), who travels to Marshall on Wednesday, April 5, for a 2:00 doubleheader.
