Sharp No-Hitter Highlights Softball Twinbill Sweep

An Ashley Sharp no-hitter in the first game helped the softball team sweep a Horizon League doubleheader at Cleveland State Saturday, the Raiders taking the opener 8-0 and the second game 10-2.

Back-to-back doubles by Libby Pfeffer and Macey Gunther to start the first game gave WSU a quick 1-0 lead and the Raiders added another run in the third as Pfeffer led off the inning with a solo home run to left, her first of the season.

Wright State then broke the game open with six runs in the sixth to force the run-rule.  After Kelly Dillow RBI single and a Becka Peterson double made it 4-0, pinch-hitter Jordan Kennaw singled in another run.  A throwing error produced another run before Gunther capped off the frame with a two-run homer to left, her first of the year.

Sharp, meanwhile, was outstanding as she allowed just one base runner to reach, a walk to Alicia Major on a 3-2 pitch in the third.  The next batter, Kait Gairing lined into a double play, meaning that Sharp faced the minimum 18 batters, striking out two.

Sharp's no-hitter is the first for Wright State since Kim Sycks pitched a 3-0 no-hitter at Loyola on April 18, 1999.

Macy Cook was a perfect three-for-three to pace the Raider offense with Pfeffer, Gunther and Honnah Susor each had two hits.  Gunther drove in three while Pfeffer scored twice.

WSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, two coming on a home run by Alexis Mayle, her third of the season, and extended the margin to 7-1 with four in the second, including a RBI single by Dillow.

Wright State tacked on another run in the third as Susor doubled in Gunther and forced the run rule with two runs in the fifth as Susor tripled in Pfeffer and later scored on a wild pitch.

Sharp (8-9) earned her second win of the day, scattering six hits in five innings.  At the plate, Susor was three-for-four with four RBI and three runs scored while Pfeffer was two-for-three with three runs scored, Mayle drove in three and scored twice and Kate Pfeffer scored twice.

Wright State (11-18, 6-2 Horizon) closes out the three-game series with Cleveland State Sunday with a single game at 1:00.
