Softball Defeats Detroit Mercy in HL Tournament Opener

Honnah Susor produced both runs, including the game-winner in the eighth, as the Wright State softball team won the opening game of the Horizon League Tournament in Chicago, defeating Detroit Mercy 2-1.

The Titans took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the second and it stayed that way until the Raiders tied it in the fifth.  With one out, Alexis Mayle singled through the right side of the infield and pinch-runner Karalyn Rhodeback advanced to second on a Kate Pfeffer sacrifice bunt.  Susor then tripled to the fence in center to drive in Rhodeback with the tying run.

The game remained tied at 1-1 despite UDM leaving two runners on in the sixth and another runner in the seventh.  Ashley Sharp pitched the first five innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three, with Ally Russell (6-7) going the final three frames, giving up two hits and a walk and striking out one.

It took just one batter to decide the contest in the bottom of the eighth as Susor smacked a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a triple.  She then scored easily as the return throw from right field was misplayed near second.

Wright State (21-29) advances to the winner's bracket semifinals against #1 seed and host UIC on Thursday, May 11, at 3:30 Eastern.
