Softball Closes Home Slate with Sweep of Northern Kentucky

The Wright State softball team closed out the home portion of its schedule Wednesday with a sweep of Northern Kentucky in Horizon League action, taking the opener 12-3 and the second game 4-0.

NKU opened the scoring in game one with a run in the first, only to see the Raiders answer with three in their half of the inning.  An RBI single by Vivi Marquez tied the game and after Becka Peterson singled in a run, an error on the play added another run.

WSU broke the game open with five runs in the second, a frame that was capped off by a solo home run to left center off the bat of Peterson, her second of the season.

A Libby Pfeffer double plated two more runs in the third and after the Norse tallied a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, Wright State forced the run-rule with two of its in the bottom of the stanza on a two-run homer to left off the bat of Macy Cook, her second home run of the series and third of the year overall.

Ally Russell (5-6) went the first three innings for the win, scattering four hits while striking out one.

At the plate, Honnah Susor, Marquez, Cook and Peterson each had two hits, with Susor, Macey Gunther, Marquez and Cook each scoring twice.  Libby Pfeffer, Marquez, Cook and Peterson had two RBI a piece.

In the second game, WSU tallied a run in the first as Susor was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a Libby Pfeffer bunt and scored on an illegal pitch.  Cook then singled in Gunther in the fifth to make it 2-0.

The Raiders addedd two insurance runs in the sixth on a Susor RBI double and a safety squeeze play by Gunther.

Ashley Sharp (15-12) scattered seven hits in pitching a complete-game shutout, striking out three.  Offensively, Susor and Kate Pfeffer each had two hits.

Wright State (20-26, 14-7 Horizon) heads to Valparaiso this weekend for a three-game series to wrap up the regular season, starting with a single game on Friday, May 5, at 2:00 Eastern.
